Side-lying leg raise
Lifting your top leg while lying on your side — strengthens the outer hip.
Beginner Low impact
How to do it
- Lie on your side in a straight line, head resting on your lower arm. Bend the bottom knee for stability if you like.
- Keep the top leg straight with toes pointing forwards.
- Lift the top leg to about hip height or a little higher, without tipping your hips back.
- Lower slowly. Complete your reps, then swap sides.
Form tips
- Lead with the heel rather than the toes.
- Keep the waist long on the underneath side.
Common mistakes
- Swinging the leg up.
- Rolling onto your back.
Easier and harder
Make it easier
Bend the top knee slightly.
Make it harder
Add a mini band around the ankles, or hold the top position for a few seconds.
