Resistance bands

Inexpensive, packable resistance: long bands, tubes with handles, and mini loops.

Three main types

  • Long flat bands — great for rows, presses, pull-aparts and assisted stretching.
  • Tube bands with handles — comfortable to grip, and many sets include a door anchor and ankle straps.
  • Mini loop bands — small loops for hip and glute work such as banded side steps and clamshells.

Resistance levels

Bands come in different strengths, usually colour-coded. A set of three or more lets you choose the right tension for each exercise. Colour codes vary between makers, so check the stated resistance rather than relying on the colour.

Safety

Check bands for nicks or tears before every use and replace them at the first sign of wear. Use a proper door anchor in a closed door, never a door handle.
